While there are some straightforward styles, every expert that was interviewed said that the big theme for 2022 will be individualized beauty. So long are the days of contouring our faces the same way and doing our eyeshadow in traditionally “pretty” blends. Nowadays, they say makeup application is all about doing it in a way that makes you feel good.

It’s so evident that [makeup] is about feeling it and an emotional connection to color,” says Lisa Eldridge, celebrity makeup artist and Lancôme’s global creative director. She notes that she’s seeing people wear several colors on their face without necessarily blending it the way we’ve traditionally been taught to: “It’s just color for color’s sake — there’s something so nice and playful about it.

Moody Makeup

In 2022, we will see unconventional explorations of self through experimental makeup looks that are more about individual expression than achieving perfection,” predicts celebrity makeup artist Robin Black. To create this type of makeup look, she says to let your mood take control. “Try anything that pops into your mind,” she says. “It doesn’t need to be flawless, you don’t need to watch a tutorial or spend hours painstaking creating it — no rules, no ‘how-tos.”

Face-Lifting Techniques

Thanks to viral social media videos, people have learned techniques to make their makeup give their faces a lifted look. On TikTok, for example, we saw users apply concealers on the outer corners of their eyes up toward the edges of their brows to give the illusion of wide-awake eyes.

Another example is a technique shown by Eldridge above, where she applies lip liner tactfully to give the illusion of fuller, more lifted, happier-looking lips. To copy, she suggests first applying concealer to the outer edges of your lips to act as a guide, then over-lining the center of the bottom lip, and when drawing up toward the corners, she says to bring the liner into the natural lip and avoid the very edge.

Bejeweled Eyes

HBO’s Euphoria planted the seeds of rhinestone-heavy makeup into our minds, and Pinterest predicts that the dazzling trend is here to stay. On its platform, it reported seeing a 110 percent increase in searches for crystal eye makeup over the last year, indicating that we’ll be seeing more sequins, glitter, pearls, rhinestones, and more in 2022.

High-Shine Lips

As Serena van der Woodsen once famously said, “Lipstick lasts longer, but gloss is more fun.” Thankfully, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Makeup by Mario, Mario Dedivanovic, predicts that high-shine lips are expected to make a major comeback in 2022.

It’s a look that’s playful and pouty, but can also have benefits when infused with skincare to treat lips,” he adds. To recreate, simply add your favorite lip gloss to either bare lips or over your favorite lipstick for an even bigger lip moment. Dedivanovic suggests his Pro Volume Lip Gloss ($22, sephora.com).

Futuristic Embellishments

Instead of channeling a blast from the past, launch yourself to the future with this style of makeup. “This trend is all about making a statement,” says Black. “The best thing about this look is that faux tattoos, face stickers, and foils are easy to remove so there is no commitment.”

Soft Sculpting

We’ve all contoured, but strongly defined cheekbones and harsh contrasts are a thing of the past. “There’s a big difference between camera-ready contouring and real life, and I think the beauty world exhaled knowing there’s an easier way with products created to look natural, effortless, and do the work for you,” says Dedivanovic, adding that that’s why he launched his brand’s Soft Sculpt Collection. “I’m confident we’ll be seeing more of it and in gorgeous, skin-loving textures and formulas.” 

Kitten Eyeliner

Eldridge predicts that this baby cat liner will dominate makeup looks in the new year. “It’s very youthful, because it’s less heavy and less pulled-back than a heavy cat-eye,” she says.

Danielle Kimiko Vincent, celebrity brow artist and founder of KIMIKO, agrees that this trend will be everywhere. “Rather than very heavy tails, eyeliner will be more narrow, begin in the middle of the eye and be drawn outwards to create a natural lift — think slimmer tails with a subtle flick,” she says. To recreate, Eldridge suggests using a powder in the same color as your liner to give the tip a nice shadow.

Celebratory Lipstick

Last spring, lipstick saw a surge in popularity as many of us removed our face masks in light of loosening COVID restrictions. Should the pandemic lessen in severity, Eldridge predicts that bright, bold lipsticks will come back with even more celebration than before.

That’s what I’m looking toward — really fresh, summery-spring makeup that screams of us being able to get out in the world and just have fun,” she says. She predicts that shades such as bright pink, purple, and orange will have their moment in the new year and recommends the Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Lipsticks in shades Rêve Toujours, Rose Cocktail, and Paris S’eveille ($32 each, lancome-usa.com) to be on-trend.

Lifted Brows

The brow lamination look is sticking around as lifted brows that open up the eyes are flattering,” declares Kimiko Vincent. “However, this trend will take on a softer form than a lamination or soap brow, which have maximum vertical hairs throughout the brow that lay quite flat and can appear two-dimensional.”

1960s Styles

I feel that because most of our faces have been partly covered with the masks, that putting extra TLC in eye makeup application is where the rise of ’60s makeup trends comes from,” celebrity makeup artist Dominique Lerma previously told InStyle. “It only makes sense that the ’60s would make a comeback being as that there are so many creative ways you can use lashes and liner to express yourself.”

Multi-Functional Color Cosmetics

We’ll see more color formulas across foundation, eye makeup, blush, lips, and even nails to incorporate treatment ingredients as consumers want to treat their skin 24/7,” predicts clean beauty chemist Krupa Koestline.

New Old-School Blush

Blush placement is a topic that’s been front and center on TikTok, and in 2022, Eldridge predicts that it’ll be found in an unexpected spot. “In a lot of vintage portraitures, you see that blush came down a little bit lower than we’re told we should, but it actually looked pretty fresh on the skin,” she says.

Dopamine-Fueled Eyes

Eldridge says that splashes of unexpected, bold colors are going to be everywhere this year. “I’m seeing so much more yellows, purples, pinks, blues, greens — colors which traditionally have are considered quite out-there are becoming a lot more mainstream.”

This goes in hand with Pinterest’s predictions, which indicate that vibrant, feel-good looks are going to be a go-to trend. For newbies who want to step out of their comfort zone, Eldridge suggests applying a tad bit of color to the inner or outer edges of your eyes for a subtle, yet impactful, bang of color. “It’s always looks so nice and fresh,” she adds.

There are beauty wonderlands and then there is celebrity make-up artist Lisa Eldridge’s House of Eldridge, a pop-up in London’s Covent Garden, which takes the definition to new heights. It’s something a bit different from a normal beauty stand in a department store,” she tells Vogue over Zoom. “It’s not merchandised, just an insight into my world. There are over a thousand pieces from my vintage make-up collection, some of which I am selling, and areas with different themes. Plus there is a replica of my studio in the back – it’s exactly like people may have seen on Instagram where I used to film my YouTube videos.

So what are her tips on how we can emulate the look at home?

1. Prep is important

One of her top tips is to start with your skincare routine. “Making sure that your skin is well hydrated and moisturized is important,” she says. “Without that, you can’t get the products to behave the way you want them to.”

2. Work with your real skin

For a no make-up make-up effect, Eldridge advises applying your foundation only in the areas it’s needed – generally in the centre of the face. “For me, it’s around my nose, mouth and chin area and a little bit on the forehead,” she says, name-checking her new Foundation as a great product to try. “It’s not a tinted moisturizer or a full coverage formula, but something in the middle that you can sheer out if you want to. It self sets, so you don’t need to powder on top of it. I really like it because it doesn’t feel like you’ve got any make-up on, but it’s still got good coverage.” She applies with her fingers or a flat brush.

3. Don’t be afraid to mix formulas up

If you’re struggling to achieve the right (lightweight) consistency in your base product, Eldridge suggests adding some moisturizer into it. This trick also helps reduce that cakey finish when certain foundations cling to dry or flaky skin.

4. Highlight

A new wave of highlighters nourish the skin while imparting the ultimate dewy sheen for a look that says “healthy”, rather than overdone. “I always use a highlighter on the high points of the cheeks – a subtle one, that doesn’t have any glitter in it – and I apply it on the nose, in the corners of eyes, and on top of the lip to create a dewy look.

5. Create an outdoorsy flush

A make-up artist essential, cream blush is the best route to go down for a natural flush. Eldridge swears by her own Enlivening Blush – in the shade Pink Soap – which she applies with fingers, building up thin layers to create the right texture and finish.

When celebs like Dua Lipa, Alexa Chung, and Kate Winslet want makeup looks that will standout on the red carpet, they all turn to renowned makeup artist Lisa Eldridge.

Welcome to Artist Spotlight #40 series on my blog.

But Eldridge’s influence doesn’t stop at her impressive client list. For over 20 years, she’s been the mastermind behind the makeup in the fashion campaigns of  brands like Gucci and Prada, wrote a best-selling book, and was one of the fist professional makeup artists to embrace YouTube, with a number of her tutorials going viral.

In-between applying makeup, Eldridge has worked with a number of top beauty brands on product development, including Chanel and Shiseido, to name a few. Currently, she’s the global creative director of Lancôme. (You can thank her for the game-changing bendable Grandiôse Liquid Eyeliner.)

After years of crafting hero products for other brands, Eldridge launched her namesake makeup line in 2018 with a single product: lipstick.

The velvet-inspired matte formulas quickly became cult-favorites, and Eldridge has recently launched nourishing, but high-pigment lip glosses, which sold out also immediately.

Here, Eldridge shares the inspiration behind her own lip products, her tips for preventing your lipstick from smudging under a face mask, and more.

At what point in your career did you know you wanted to start your own brand? 

I spent a long time working with labs and cosmetic scientists while consulting and developing for them. I really enjoyed doing it and all of the companies I was working with were very complimentary about how good I was with the scientists and putting everything all together. I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to do it. However, I’m not a big planner and things usually happen organically for me, which is what happened with my lipsticks as well.

How did your experiences as a makeup artist shape your own brand? 

I think I’m well-placed as someone who does tutorials, but also does makeup every day on different faces and skin tones. My experience of handling makeup and seeing makeup in motion gives me a double side.

Why did you decide to launch with lipsticks? 

The funny thing about cosmetic science is that products can often take years to develop. While I have other things coming, some of which I’ve been working on for such a long time, the lipsticks just happened to be ready first. I had the idea to make this velvety lipstick, and we tried once before and it didn’t work. We finally found a way to get the lipsticks out of the mold and still look like velvet. It was a challenge, and I had to put a lot of quality control in place, with people checking every single bullet. I was 100% satisfied, so I was happy with launching it. Since it’s only me, I’m not under pressure to launch on a certain date or month, whether the product is ready or not, which is quite a luxury.

You recently came out with lip glosses. What was the inspiration behind this launch? 

While my matte lipstick formula isn’t drying, I wanted to do something that was more moisturizing. I had the idea of creating a product that feels like a lip treatment, but still offers a lot of color. We tried different formulas and we were happy with this one, along with the colors. Sometimes things come quite quickly, and other times things will take years. And by quickly, I mean within 18 months.

This year has been weird for wearing lipstick, among many other things. Where do you see lipstick trends going in the time of COVID-19? 

I planned to do lips again so I was a bit concerned about the face masks. But, lipstick has been just as popular as ever. There’s always that lipstick effect, which is a historically proven thing, where people like to cheer themselves up with a bold lip color. I thought people would stick to more natural colors, but my red shades have been super popular this year. Velvet Dragon, which is a new red shade, has just flown. A lot of people send me photos and videos showing me the lipstick they’re wearing under their masks. A lot of doctors and nurses wear my lipsticks. They show me they’re wearing a really bright red lipstick under all of their PPE. I think it’s like a secret thing that’s quite cheerful and brings a lot of joy.

What are your tips for preventing lipstick from getting on your face mask? 

Stick to thin layers. When you put thin layers on, the lipstick will bond in synergy with the skin. Sometimes if you put a lot on from the bullet, there’s a certain amount that’s sitting on top of the skin. I always say to start with a thin layer — maybe with a lip brush — so that it almost settles in the creases on the lip. Then, put another thin layer on top and tap it in with your finger or blot it with a tissue. You’ll still feel the creaminess on the surface, but you won’t have any excess product available to come off.

What is a common mistake people make when applying lipstick? 

The shape you make — especially with strong colors — is important unless you have completely balanced lips. For example, I have downturned lips, like a lot of people do, and if you follow your lips all the way down to the corners of the mouth, it tends to make you look miserable and sad. My tip is to roughly following your natural lips when you fill them in and just stand back and look into the mirror. Take a lip pencil and add a little bit of bulk or use a Q-tip to take a bit off one side, as needed. You’ll look like a different person. It’s a really subtle tweak, but you need to look at your lip shape and see what suits you.

Lisa Eldridge is an English-New Zealand makeup artist, businesswoman, author, and YouTuber. She had her first big break when she was booked by ELLE magazine to work with model Cindy Crawford. From 2003 to 2013, Eldridge was Creative Director for Boots No7, where she was responsible for developing, re-designing and re-launching the brand. Eldridge, since 6 January 2015, is currently the global creative director of Lancôme, working across product development, advertising campaigns and digital strategy. In October 2015, Eldridge published the book Face Paint: The Story of Makeup.

Following a move to London, Eldridge took a course in photographic makeup artistry at Complexions, began building her portfolio and eventually signing with a makeup agency. She had her first big break when she was booked by aforementioned ELLE magazine to work with Cindy Crawford. Crawford and Eldridge subsequently worked together on several more shoots. She has been based in Paris, New York and Los Angeles, and now lives in London. Her work has appeared on the pages of British, Italian, French, Chinese and Japanese Vogue, Love, Allure, Glamour, Elle, Numéro, Harper’s Bazaar, Pop, and Lula for covers, fashion, beauty and celebrity shoots.

When I attended makeup academy, I was often referred to her videos by instructors, to recreate her looks or take in her knowledge. Ever since then I’ve been a huge supporter of hers!

In February 2010, Eldridge launched her website, which has become one of the go-to sites for make-up tutorials, beauty advice and insider knowledge.

Lisa Eldridge wrote her first New York Times bestseller Face Paint, which she describes as “all about the history of makeup – something I’ve always wanted to write. It’s a hardback book (8 x 10 inches), with 60,000 words – full of fascinating, surprising and at times unbelievable stories of how and why the items in your makeup bag got to be there. I also spent a long time sourcing the right images – beautiful paintings, illustrations and iconic photography – to tell the story.”
