All About MAC’s VIVA GLAM Lipsticks

In 2019, MAC Cosmetics celebrated the 25th anniversary of the MAC VIVA GLAM campaign, which has become a piece of beauty history. MAC was started by Frank Angelo and Frank Toskan in 1994 in reaction to the AIDS crisis. “We developed a great lipstick color we called VIVA GLAM,” said Toskan. “This little lipstick gave people dignity and saved lives.”

Since 1994, MAC VIVA GLAM has raised more than $500,000,000 USD, partnering with local organizations to ensure that help reaches those who need it most. In particular, those affected by AIDS are being helped through various services while researching and developing further into the symptoms, causes, and treatments of it.

Over the years, VIVA GLAM lipstick campaigns have included celebrities such as RuPaul, Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and more.

In 2020, as part of MAC VIVA GLAM’s recent $10,000,000 USD donation, local organizations are providing essential healthcare services and preparing and delivering nutritious meals to vulnerable communities affected by COVID-19.

Currently, there are 3 shades of the VIVA GLAM lipstick:

– An intense brownish blue-red
– A creamy subdued pinkish beige-mauve
– A muted brownish-plum

Some MAC Go-Tos

I REALLY love the fact that MAC (among other brands) has customizable eyeshadow palettes. The formula has only improved since MAC eyeshadows dominated the market and set the trends years ago for many years to come. This is just one of my favourites that I put together.

MAC brushes are notoriously famous for a good reason: they last a very long time and they’re soft and easy to work with. I have pretty much all of them but a couple shown here are:

286 Synthetic Duo Fibre Tapered Brush
221 Synthetic Small Tapered Blending Brush

MAC lipsticks also were some of the first and the best on the market. My first ever lipstick was Velvet Teddy (of course due to the endless comments about it among beauty lovers), and although there’s such a large variety of lipsticks available these days, their formula is still among the top.

The lipstick shown here is in Jubilee.

The Full Beat

On days when I want a full-coverage, long-lasting, sweat-and-everything-proof base, I go for this combination. The Studio Fix line by MAC is famous for a good reason.

The Studio Fix Fluid foundation is a medium-full coverage, oil-proof formula, that lasts on the skin all day. If you have dry skin, consider a hydrating base and setting spray. I buff it into the skin with the 170 Synthetic Rounded Slant Brush.

The Studio Fix Powder + Foundation is a medium coverage powder, great for oily skin. Same recommendation applies: if you have dry skin, consider using a hydrating base and setting spray. I use the 150 Synthetic Large Powder Brush with it.

– MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD foundation, Ultra HD concealer, loose translucent setting powder, sculpting powder, Mist & Fix setting spray
– M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream in Goldlight, Bronze bronzer, Show Gold extra dimension skin finish, black pro longwear eyeliner, single eyeshadows

Best Cream Concealers

Throughout my practice, I’ve grown to appreciate the formulation and use of cream/pot concealers. They can look really heavy under the eyes if too much product is applied, however, a small amount blended in with the warmth of your finger or a pro tool/brush can be very effective.

I use cream concealers for:
– Carving out the eyebrows for a clean look
– Color-correcting in small areas with a slim layer under the foundation (peach, yellow, green)
– Cream contour with darker shades
– Spot conceal on top or under foundation with a light layer

My top recommendations shown are:
MAC Studio Fix Conceal & Correct Palette
Catrice Camouflage Cream
MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Cream Concealer
NYX Above and Beyond Full Coverage Concealer
NYX Conceal, Correct, Contour Palette
Make Up For Ever Color Correction Palette

(I own a couple of shades & shade families of each for my kit)

Do you use cream concealer pots/palettes? If you, which one? Let me know in the comments below!

Angelic MAC

I’ve been really enjoying the formula and the compact design of these MAC highlighter palettes. They come in 4 shade varieties (2 of them are shown, but I own 3 for my kit).

Shown:
Flash + Awe (pink tones)
Get It Glowin’ (gold tones)

Own but not shown:
Shimmy Peach (deep peach tones)

Other variety:
Get Lit (pale pastels tones)

I enjoy using this creamy lightweight formula with these brushes:
159 Synthetic Duo Fibre Blush Brush (shown in the photo)
184 Synthetic Duo Fibre Fan Brush

And a little Fix + is always a good idea to refresh the skin makeup and intensify eyeshadows or highlighters!

Treat Your Lips!

I’ve tried SO many different lip balms, chapsticks, lip scrubs, treatments, etc. But the ones that I’ve found to work best for different situations are:

  • NIVEA Hydro Care – very hydrating traditional lip balm (doesn’t disappear in minutes, like EOS…)
  • Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm – very nice for no-makeup days, provides a sheer tint of colour with long-lasting moisture from 100% natural ingredients, comes in a wide variety of shades
  • MAC Lip Scrubtious – my favourite lip scrub, comes in a variety of scents, works like magic with my (or clients’) lips
  • Wet’n’Wild Lip Scrub – a great drugstore alternative to the MAC one, comes in a couple other scents
  • Vaseline Lip Therapy – although I’m not a fan of using pot/tub lip treatments, I still use this one due to its intense hydration and repair qualities
  • NYX #thisiseverything Lip Oil – a lightweight, slightly tinted lip oil that provides a good balance of moisture/treatment and glossy shine
  • MAC Lip Conditioner – an emollient-based balm that conditions lips, locks in moisture, and gives a soft shine
  • MAC Prep + Prime Lip – a colour-free lipstick base that adds light moisture, smoothes, and refines. Works amazingly under liquid lipsticks!

When working on clients, I always moisturize the skin and apply any of the needed lip treatments/prep products at the very beginning, and giving them time to sink in and do their job.
